Bad Tidings LOVED the lighthouse. There were some nights where all she did was float up against a rock and perch her head on her hooves, just watching the light go around and around and around.

She liked that it was meant as a beacon of hope, a lifeline to sailors. She also loved the horror stories and terrible tales, of the light gone out and ships wrecked against a rocky shore in the night, their crew lost to the sea.

Not that anything that exciting ever happened in Phonyland Lagoon but a girl could dream.

Every few days or so, she even wandered over and floated in the water nearby, looking for a glimpse of the pretty caretaker who surely had so much fun working in such a magical place.

It was another maintenance day at the lighthouse.  Knots, her mother, would be coming around with another supply of cheap plastic tourist kitsch essential items for Phonyland's bustling economy.  She had not seen her mother in three months so she wanted the lighthouse to look as good as it possibly could.  The small keeper's cabin had been attached to it and the wiring was all finished.

The lighthouse itself ran on what was considered state-of-the-art for Phonyland.  Solar panels, windmills, and hydro generators were slowly starting to be installed as Cast Aweigh could afford them.  It had taken years to get them in place but now should the main power grid go out on further inland, the lighthouse could sustain itself and possibly assist those in need of electricity.

Today Cast Aweigh would tether herself with a boat and a life jacket to the side of the shore and inspect the generators and see what sort of... peculiarities had been washed out to see via the city's enormous drainage system.  Sometimes she found useful things, sometimes she found whole people needing assistance.  Since nothing really died, often Phonies were found stuck in the pipes for days.

Bad Tidings approached the shore with a few easy flicks of her tail, often resurfacing to check her surroundings before diving again to push along the rocky lagoon bottom. This wasn't the cleanest areas of water around and she often stopped to check out the floating paraphernalia that had escaped the trash nets.

One day she was hoping to find something really cool. Like someone's pale water-soaked hand cut jaggedly free from the limb. Then she would have to piece together the mystery of who it had belonged to. Oh, it would be so fun!

She was drifting closer now and she popped her head back up to study the lighthouse and see if her favourite lightkeeper was nearby.

Cast tightened the rope that was her safety line back to the shore, checked the metal loop it was attached to, and checked her life vest.  Phony life vests had to be the most difficult things to put on without help.  Thankfully, she was a Unicorn, and frequently used her magic as a spare set of hooves to help her check knots, clasps, and hinges.

With that, she carefully got into the little rowboat.  The rowboat had its own name, it was tradition!  It was pale green with clovers painted on its sides and back end.

"C'mon, Miss Minty," she said to the boat.  "Let's go see what the drain's got for us today."

Miss Minty was hard to miss.

Bad Tidings squeaked in delight when she spotted the little boat. "There she is," she whispered to herself, then blew a couple of bubbles. She dipped under the water and with a few easy flicks off her tail began her sneaky approach.

It wasn't long until she was floating beneath the rowboat, following its progress. This was the closest she had ever been to the pretty lightkeeper and Bad Tidings debated whether to pop up and say hello or not. On one hoof, she could finally make the acquaintance of someone she had been admiring and on the other... sometimes romantic daydreams were better kept that way.

She thought about it for all of two seconds and then zoomed upwards, coming out the water, launching droplets everywhere and hooking her front hooves on the side of the boat making it rock dangerously.

"HI!" She cried, having decided that the pros outweighed any possible cons.

The sound felt like being struck by lightning!  Thank goodness she was tethered because she promptly rolled off the boat to one side with a series of thumps and a splash.  There was barely time for a yelp and then a sad gurgle.  Thankfully, she knew how to swim even though she was wrapped in a life vest.  She spluttered and pushed her head up out of the water, pushing her long locks from her forehead and looking around.

After some coughing and thought she replied simply, "Oh, hello!"

She looked around, thinking it was someone who'd gotten stuck in the drain.

Oops! Well that hadn't been her intention!

Bad Tidings felt a little bad but not too much. After all, the lighthouse lady could clearly float and being in the water was always better than out.

Why did anyone bother with boats unless it was to shipwreck and float away on a piece of door as your lover freezes to death in the waves?

She slipped back under the water and popped back up right beside the unicorn.

"Hi," she said again, this one a bit quieter and slightly more breathlessly as she realized that this was her and they were so close and she was so pretty.

"Are you okay?  Are you stuck?"

Cast had no idea of Tiding's other half.  She clambered back onto the small boat and opened up a pack with tools for cutting people free.  Her new friend looked green and pale, but you couldn't judge a Phony's condition by their color, she found.  Some of them started off purple or ice blue!

"How long have you been caught here?  I can get a helicopter from the hospital here in about ten minutes," she went on.  "I've taken some emergency medical training, but it's only first aid.  Thankfully the water's not quite so cold this time of year."

Bad Tidings bobbed in the water, watching as the unicorn returned to the boat. Why her four-legged cousins preferred to stay on land she would never understand.

At the questions she at first tilted her head in confusion and gave a soft thoughtful 'hmmm?' before suddenly it clicked. They were roleplaying! Oh how fun! Yes, Tidings could do that!

"I've been caught for days," she cried, throwing her arm up across her face like she'd seen those distraught heroines do in moves. "Please save me!" And then the gorgeous lightkeeper would whisk her back to shore and give her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation except sexy and sweet.
