Paladin wasn't really a foal kind of foal -- not out of choice, mind you, but out of habit. Foals didn't tend to stick around him long, often either bored or off-put by his less-than-childlike mannerisms and interests. If he had been given more of a chance, he might explain that he didn't exactly know what foals typically got themselves into, but he neither enjoyed making excuses nor had the opportunity to do so. And, truthfully, he wasn't sure how to comment much about his lack of friends his own age. It wasn't as if Paladin was bullied, or lacked a hospitable environment, or anything else that could account for why he struggled so much socially. Sure, his dad and one of his siblings had vanished not just once, but twice, and if he really wanted to he could use that as his defense, yet... well, Paladin wasn't quite sure how he felt about the twice loss of his father and sibling. It was surely a lot to take in, true, but he had also grown used to the absence of Just Lance and Sanctuary. It still hurt when he lingered on the thought, as he suspected it always would, but it wasn't the reason for his lack of a social life.

Maybe he was just a weird guy. He could get behind that -- he had heard it enough, he supposed.

Well, none of that mattered right that moment, either. Blind Love had done what she did best and planned a playdate for both he and Mercy, and now they had little time until the guest would arrive. He had stationed himself in the kitchen, eyes narrowed and brows scrunched as he tried to consider a snack for the three of them to share. His mother had always insisted on providing a treat when guests arrived, and while his mother had been more than happy to be the one to provide, Paladin had insisted on taking over the duty himself. How else would he learn? By the time Bright Gallery had made her way into their living room, there was an assortment of small fruits, ants on a log, and raisins placed delicately on a pale pink plate, floating inches above his head as he entered and deposited the offering.

"Evening, Bright Gallery," he greeted cordially, glancing back to wherever Mercy was and nodding gently towards his sibling. "We have snacks you can help yourself to."

Marbles? He'd never played before, but he had seen other foals and fillies play with them during recess. "Yes, I would be interested. What are the rules?"

Paladin waited ever so patiently as Fair Pace ruminated over his request, his eyes only flicking off the artist to sweep over the table one more time. He perked into focus when Pace exclaimed, returning the nod with his own small one. Regardless of how dry his face remained, a twist of excitement coiled in his stomach, gleeful of the idea of having his very own hand-painted egg from someone as talented as Fair Pace. He had never acquired custom art before, but it was certainly of interest after today. At the sound of his mother's soft giggle towards Pace's comment towards her, he tilted his head, catching her in the corner of his eye before returning his attention back to Pace.

Evidently, that was a question he couldn't answer himself, so he waited for his mother's response.

Blind Love, meanwhile, was delighted at the proposition. Paladin had not made many friends throughout his growth, and while she understood the number of friends wasn't what mattered, she did want to ensure her son wasn't lonely. Paladin wasn't the type to express such feelings, anyway, but she had witnessed how a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth whenever he mentioned children at school had included him in a game, or if he was assigned a partner for class. The house had been so quiet ever since Sanctuary had left with wherever Just Lance had gone... perhaps a selfish part of her also wanted to hear the warmth of children's laughter within her house again.

"That'd be lovely. I work until midevening most weekdays, but I'm home shortly after the kids come home from school. What do you think, Paladin?"

Her son nodded discreetly. "Mother bakes cookies every Thursday.  I can set aside some from my portions."

Blind Love hummed a giggle behind him and shook her head. "No no, I can make extra! Do either of you have any allergies?" The last part of her sentence lifted towards Fair Pace, a pleasant smile left on the pegasus' face.

Quote from: Gl!tch~Meanwhile, Blind Love is thrilled she can get pretty hoofmade art and set her son up for a playdate. Win win + cute artist comes over??????

I also continued the timeline of this is prior to her seeing Just Lance a second time, and likely the playdate will follow that timeline, and then we can move past that?

Wh-

THEY WERE ALL GOING TO DIE. This was it! Weatherly did the one thing he wished he had done numerous times before; he RAN!

D. Run!!!
#15
Weatherly stared at the lock with anxiety swallowed in his throat, forcing his trembling legs closer. This was so much! Too much! He was eager to be done with all this -- to save the poor souls who needed them and then retreat back to his sister's lighthouse. Maybe sleep for days, too. But to get there meant he had to get out of here, and what stood between him and somewhere else was a large lock that looked awfully familiar.

No, it wasn't the same one that the crew would place on loot, but it was similar enough. Back in his ship days he remembered distinctly one phony that the crew didn't inherently trust; a stallion who was almost one with the sea but had a terribly itchy hoof that twitched for anything that sparkled. He was a great navigator -- perhaps the best the crew had ever seen, which warranted his worth, but anything valuable had to be locked away nice and good. Weatherly also had the pleasure of being handed a lock when bored; the ship lacked toys and the crew wasn't going to stop by a toy store for the strange foal they carried. Locks, however, were plentiful, and Weatherly had toyed with them enough to learn how to open them.

You did what you had to when bored at sea.

So he hoped that he could work the current lock -- maybe if he treated it like the ones from the ship he could figure out the trick to it? It was better than nothing, and Weatherly was not strong enough to rip up the fence or physically throw himself into peril. No; he wasn't strong, but he was crafty.

Maybe he could do this.

A: Pick the lock.
