Title: [Kindness ORP] The Granny Garden Crusade

"It will be good for everyone," Cirrus had explained, anxious as usual, dark bags under his eyes from another sleepless night. He'd gotten a lot better now that they'd grown up a bit but he still seemed certain that the second he let his children out of his sight they would be snatched up or struck by lighting.

Or turn into evil baby snatching swamp demons, which honestly the chances weren't half bad. Even Witch Hazel thought their mother's pond was quite nice, especially in the summer.

Which was why Cirrus had spent a lot of their youth mentioning how good it was to be nice and kind and do good. It had mostly sunk into their mind except for Cadejo, who was simply a lost cause though Cirrus had yet to realize his son was a little psychopath.

And that led to here and now, Witch Hazel standing outside the house of some old granny who could no longer take care of her yard, a tangled mess of tall grass, stinging nettle and blackberry bushes with alarmingly large thorns. She had all the tools required... and no siblings in sight.

Her mouth pressed into a thin line.

Well, it was time to 'show some kindness' to their neighbours as Cirrus had put it while drowning himself in another cup of tea. It was a good thing she liked gardening.

(https://mylittlephony.citycyb.org/phony/liveandletwine.png)Live and Let Wine had spent the whole of her life made to be prim and proper.  She wore luxurious things, though they were her mother's hand-me-downs.  For the wealthy, hand-me-downs were what others would call "practically new".  She often wore real gold or name brand, but it really meant very little to her.  She was an only child and terribly lonely.

Live had just been happening by with a large sun hat and large sunglasses when she saw the state of the house's yard.  She stopped to look it over, pulling down her shades to get a good look.

"My goodness," she said.  "I bet tigers could live in there and no one would be any wiser."

Aegis ambled by, bored out of her mind. She couldn't find any of her siblings and she didn't feel like visiting him down at the carnival today. He had eaten up all her bits as it were. And she didn't exactly have many friends, except Catwalk, but she wasn't quite sure where the other filly was. Instead, she was simply wandering around without direction.

At least until she saw a brown filly staring at an aweful mess of a yard. "Tigers, lions and bears." She added onto the other fillies thoughts before spotting the tan and green one up front. "Ohy, you almost blended in there. This.....Er....yours?"

She was pulling on the protective gardening hoof-gloves when Live and Let Wine arrived and she had to agree. Tigers, lions and bears could be wandering about in the undergrowth.

"I wouldn't be surprised," Witch Hazel sighed.

And then there were three.

Witch Hazel's mouth quirked up slightly when a newcomer voiced the same words she had been thinking. "No, it's not mine. It belongs to an old lady and I am here to help clean it up for her." She decided not to add that she had been volunteered and then abandoned by her siblings.

It was only the love she had for her father that made her pick up the little trowel instead of walking away. "Well, wish me luck," she said, nodding to the other two, both of whom looked far too glamorous to be standing next to such a messy garden.

He came to a natural pause when he saw the babbens gathered around what looked like a swamp pit that had taken over a yard, frowning to himself.  Surely, only trouble would follow a group that would lollygag around some unkempt property; even from across the way, he could see the thorns and burrs, could foresee them stuck in manes and tails and hooves without caution --

And then he saw Witch Hazel.  If possible, his frown deepened, exhaling sharply through his nose as he flit across the road and over the two near by, landing next to the pale filly as if he had been summoned against his will.  Mercy surveyed the damage of the yard, noted the tools in Witch Hazel's magic, and was able to piece together at least some of the story.

Here they were again.  Doing for others in which they would not, or could not, do for themselves.

"Can I help?" he asked with surprising delicacy for his own nature, using a little puff of his wings to 'sweep' some of the leaves in the very small clearing together.

(https://i.imgur.com/KIl9qJI.png)Spring Fling was coming back from handing out tickets for a festival when he nearly bumped into Wine who had stopped to stare at someone's yard. He apologized immediately. "Sorry!" he exclaimed, before looking to see what this other phony had been staring at. "Woooow," he whispered, at the state of things. "It looks like a jungle!"

He walked over to the gate and peered closer. Oh hey, there were other phonies in there! And the one seemed about to start gardening. He couldn't help but think that it looked like a big job. Maybe he should help. He trotted over, as best he could through the mess of a yard, and offered his assistance. After all, he had nothing better to do that day. And he couldn't very well leave without at least offering to assist with clean up.

Aegis snorted and rolled her eyes at the colt that flew over her head and cast a side glance at the other filly she had stopped beside. And then another colt bumped into her. Hadn't she seen him at a toy store before? "Seems like a party...." she said, mostly to herself before fluffing out her wings and trotting over to Witch Hazel. "Clearly you can't do this by yourself and I doubt those silly tools are going to help much. Let me." she grinned, rolling her shoulders as if she were ready to throw a punch. She stopped over to a spot of weeds, glaring down at them with a smirk before ripping them out of the ground with near barbaric force for a filly - though she was a carousel so she was at least a tad bigger than the others. (She liked to throw that around).

Turning back towards the other foals she grinned. "I'll be your muscle." she about posed. Someday she could be helping protect someone through a real jungle, maybe this would be good practice.

Peach was on her way to the market to get supplies to experiment more with cooking. That's when she saw the gathering of other young phonies. Well first she saw the large overgrown yard which seems like it could have hidden a house behind it from the right angle. Though was it a garden? Could she make a new friend that could perhaps help her with produce?
The filly made her way towards the group and peaked her head in their directions. "Could you all use some more help?"

The little mer found another excuse to get to explore away from the water today and just chilled on his hover-board until he ran into a group of little babbins like himself. He listened to what was going on and when he saw the overgrown grass in the old mare's lawn he couldn't keep quiet anymore.

Eyes widened he was shocked at the sight. "WOAH, this place is like overgrown kelp but above water!" He zoomed around on his board and wondered what to do. "Anywhere specifically that I need to be to tame this mess?" he called to the crowd.

The little mer watched the others and looked at his own hooves. Not really sure who to ask he just shouted really loud hoping one of them would pay attention to him. "ALSO, DO I NEED TO DIG WITH MY OWN HOOVES OR IS THERE SOMETHING I  COULD USE?"

She only managed one step towards her fate before a familiar face arrived and Witch Hazel considered Mercy[for a moment, a fellow fighter striving to make the world a better place and said, trying not to seem too obviously overwhelmed with gratitude, "yes please."

But he wasn't the only one. The edge of the garden was becoming quite crowded, much to her surprise. Her siblings hadn't managed to show up (yet) but help was arriving in the form of an enthusiastic army of peers. It almost made her wish she went to a proper school, then she might know some of their names.

"I-" was the only response she managed to utter when Aegis stomped over before biting her tongue to stop from the instinctive 'I can do it on my own'. Witch Hazel watched as the other filly ripped some weeds out of the ground and rethought her original opinion. She was not glamorous at all. She was terrifying.

"Thank you", she said instead, knowing she might as well take advantage of the situation. "You're very strong. You can be on weed duty. You're really good at it."

Then there were more questions and some yellow guy shouting at the back and she barely covered a flinch. Well, time to sort this out before she decided to run into the jungle and not return.

"Hello everyone! Thank you for offering your help. An old lady owns this house and needs us to clean up the garden. I've got a few gardening supplies that we can share out and any assistance is appreciated," she said to the group.

She nodded at Wine gratefully. "I know a few things about plants too but mostly their uses, not how they grow, so that would be very helpful."

"My name is Live and Let Wine, how do you do!" she nodded, smiling.

She came up closer to the yard and got a good look.  The grass was so tall she could barely make out any hint of sidewalk or path leading to the front door.

"Well, some plants are great for bees and you want a few bee buddies," she said as she removed her sunglasses and shoved them into a purse that was almost too large for her.  She kept her sun hat on, though, she didn't want to bake in the sun.  "Just point me in the right direction, dear, I'm dying to do something with my own four hooves instead of having someone do it for me.  I can't tell you how miserable it is when that's an ONLY option."

Spring decided he would stick around. He smiled at Witch Hazel, who seemed grateful for everyone's help. He looked for an extra pair of gloves, while listening to the others talk. "My name is Spring Fling," he replied, deciding to throw that out there in case anyone wanted his attention. Upon finding some gloves, he put them on and began his attempt at getting rid of all those weeds. He yanked hard, pulling them up and placing them in a bag to put out for yard waste pick up later. He hummed a little as he worked; figuring music would make the time go by faster. If they really applied themselves and made a team effort, surely this yard would look beautiful when they were done.

Aegis grinned. "Don't worry, I wont hurt ya. Just the weeds." she winked at Witch Hazel before marching over to a rather nasty looking spot of plant growth. Some had thorns, some didn't and some just looked like a wild mess.

She listened as the tan filly she first ran into seemed to describe plants like she knew them so she cast a sort of rough but shy glance over. "So...um... are all these bad?" she pointed at the patch she was in front of. "Ya know, before I just go crazy and yeet them all." she grinned, puffing out her chest.

Live and Let Wine had the reassuring sort of personality that allowed Witch Hazel to give a soft sigh of relief, as if somebody here knew something and it wouldn't be all up to her to sort out the sudden group of children. Even if the other professed to rarely do things on their own, she certainly seemed capable regardless.

"My name is Witch Hazel. It's nice to meet you all."

She smiled at Spring Fling, who was proactive in grabbing some gloves and getting to work. The hoverboarding Mer was interesting. She hadn't seen many of the lake dwellers but apparently they were just as keen on gardening as anyone else.

As for Aegis, well, she certainly was enthusiastic about showing off her strength. Which was fine. They'd need the muscle.

Witch Hazel was not at all comfortable with trying to delegate tasks but she was going to do her best to keep everyone on the right track. "Um, there's three main jobs to complete. Weeding, pruning and cutting the lawn. There's meant to be a push mower and a green bin around the corner, if we can get to it."

Now that she was talking about the task, Witch Hazel was even more grateful they were all here to help.

"Maybe you can point out the weeds?" She asked Wine. "And maybe someone with wings or someone who can reach for the lawn?"

Live slung her massive purse over one of the fence slats.  If anyone stole the darn thing, they'd have to really want to.  It was large, gaudy the more you stared at it, and only had a pair of sunglasses in it.  The little unicorn shoved her hat down on her head and would have rolled up her sleeves if she had any.

"The only way to see what's what is to get in it," she slowly went into what should be the entrance of the yard.

She used the tiny magic available to her horn to push some of the weeds aside and she looked down to see where she was stepping.  Live blinked and peered down as though she were on safari.

"There's a whole bicycle in here!" she exclaimed.  "And over there's a soccer ball!"

"Sooo just dive in, got it." she nodded and, if a phony could roll up her sleeves, she would have. Grinning she charged forward with Live and began ripping out anything that looked like a weed. Or at least until the other filly found an entire bicycle. "Woah, wonder how long that's not seen any action." she grinned, giving a flutter of her wings and alighting herself on its seat.

It creaked and made several weird noises and for a moment she frowned before finding the rusty old bell and tapping the slide. It gave a pathetic dulled sprrrrring noise before sounding like it literally croaked. "Well...that's lame." she frowned and picked a few over grown vines from its handles.

"Help me get it out of here," Live asked Aegis.  "The fewer surprises in this grass, the better!"

Live tugged at the bicycle, only to find weeds had twirled around almost every single spoke of its tired wheels.  She cut away at them with her horn as best she could.

Grass started to stain her forehead and feet.  She was glad she didn't have any allergies!

"OH, sure." Aegis said, fluttering her wings and landing back down on the ground.

"Hold up." she called to Live, rolling her shoulders and punched at the ground to start ripping the weeds off the tires of the bike before giving it a good kick forward once she got most of it untangled. "Watch out!" she grinned, peering over at Live.

Wave gave a longful stare at the choices given. "Pushing a mower with a hoverboard seems like a REALLY BAD idea..." he told her...he could already imagine the mower go off on  its own with him flailing about since he doesn't have back legs to turn the clunkky thing... he really wanted to help but felt like it was better to not touch the machine... he gave a slight moan and looked at the other two phonies nearby to see what they're  doing...

"Uh i will cut along this area to get to the green bin! At least with a hoverboard we can tie the bin to it and i can carry the grass away! "

He took a pair of oversized scissors (im so sorry its that big gardening tool but my brain cant remember atm will edit in later orz) and started to cut the grass down to size, and hoped that he could clear a path for himself to get to the plastic container to throw or heave the cut grass in.

Looking back at the others,  he grinned as he found a deflated beachball to show them and threw it over the fence. He'll pick it up later when the grass is cut and  mowed down and tidied up.

They were all getting to work and Witch Hazel had been about to start pruning but her attention kept shifting back towards Wine and Aegis as they fought to free the bike. Clearly they wouldn't make any progress until that was out of the way.

"That's a good idea," she said to the mer, smiling slightly, before stepping over to check out the old bike. Aegis was going at the weeds like crazy, tearing up plants and dirt without a care. The kick the followed helped dislodge even more of the tangled growth and so Witch Hazel grabbed at the handles and started to pull, trying to drag the rest of it away from the weeds.

Aegis grinned as Witch Hazel began to tug on the bars. "Let me know if it needs another kick!" she said, putting her back hooves up on the wheel and began to walk backwards to try and help push it out. She used her wings to help steady herself but she couldn't see much from that angle, even with craning her head over her shoulder. "Oh. And let me know when to stop yeah?" she asked, full on dirty and grinning.

Live slung her purse on the sturdiest looking fence post and found a pair of garden shears and a trowel.  There were garden stones that looked like they had once formed a ring, but now it was more like a sad, disconnected and squashed loop.  She dug up the grass to make a clear patch of earth and pushed the stones around it to make a more defined section for fresh flowers.

There didn't seem to be anything growing or blooming at the moment, so she cut the grass down as evenly as she could.

"If anyone finds anything that looks remotely like it could have been part of a flower patch, I can dig it up and transplant it here," she called out.

Witch Hazel was not used to hard labour and she was beginning to learn the limitations of someone who had spent most of their foalhood cooped up inside. It was lucky Aegis was so strong because that was the only reason the bike started to move, even with Hazel pulling as hard as she could.

Finally it started to pull free and Witch Hazel didn't even have time to say stop when the bike suddenly popped free and sent her tumbling backwards. She landed on her back with a startled 'oof' and then lay there, breathing heavily.

She lifted a hoof-up in agreement when Live called out. Yeah, looking for potential flowers seemed like an easy next task.

Aegis couldn't help but snicker when Witch Hazel tumbled backwards and landed with a splat. It simply put a grin on her face and pride in her chest at her strength.
Still, for as much as she was a harsh butt, she had her moments. "Here." she said as she took the filly's outstretched hoof even though it was lifted in agreement and helped the other get her legs back under here. She turned back towards Live and tilted her head but nodded. "Not a plant expert but uh.... I'll let you know. I'm more of a strength filly myself.... so if you need any heavy lifting I'm your gal!" she grinned, beating her wings proudly, grinning and wiping a hoof across her face, only to smear a bit of dirt across her cheek - which didn't seem to bother her in any maner.

"Excellent, then you can help me put these garden stones all around this patch I've cleared out!" she said, waving her crooked trowel.  "I can use some magic, but nothing like what I'd need to move these stones about.

She started to shear, trim, and shape the grass around the newly recreated flower patch.  "There were roses here, but they're long since dead."

Witch Hazel was grateful for the hoof up and returned upright, no worse for wear except for some extra dirt. "Thank you."

Live looked like she was already making great progress and so Hazel grabbed the handlebars of the now freed bike and started to pull it away from the garden to clear up some space. Now that it wasn't being tied down by plants and earth, it was awkward but not too heavy.

She dragged it out and left it on the nature strip, then took a second to catch her breath.

Phew. The garden was looking... better? Sort of. You could at least tell some progress had been made. Those blackberry bushes were going to be hard to tackle though. Their thorns hadn't given out in the slightest.

Aegis eyed the stones a bit, almost as if second guessing herself before grinning. "Sure, leave it to me!" she said, getting to work and moving a stone, albeit one by one, around the path the other filly had created. It was a bit harder than she expected but she reminded herself that this would be perfect exercise for building muscle. As always, she remembered to try and lift with her knees. She did her best not to get in Live's way so took a few moments to stop and catch her breath, glancing back at Witch Hazel. "You good over there? Almost done here." she noted, gesturing to the rock path that was now looking more like a real flower bed from the combined efforts.

"Here, let me help you!" Live said, assisting with the rock placement using what little magic her tiny horn could offer and whatever leg power she had.

It became a clear enough patch and she transplanted whatever she could.  She was covered in dirt and absolutely okay with that.  It felt fine getting leaves in her hair and dirt between her little split toes.

In fact, it felt good to just... do good!  Without having to throw money at it, like her parents did. It felt nice being part of a community effort, even if she didn't know a single person there.  Live felt like she could contribute more than what her parents ideas of contributions were, if only they let her prove herself more.  She didn't want to be seen as a spoiled heiress.  What would happen if they suddenly lost everything?  She didn't want to be ill prepared.  If she could gain some real world experiences, it would be less difficult as she became an adult.

"It was really fun working with all of you," she said, sitting down to clear yard clippings off her face.

Wave Watcher was busy scooping up all the garbage in a bucket and hauling away as the other phonies with better land strength hacked away through the tall grass forest.
He had no time to keep the conversations going and just worked as fast as his hoverboard allowed him.
Wiping sweat away from his face with a soiled hoof, he can't wait for this task to be over with and take a dive back into the water. his skin felt a little dry and he lost track of time how long he had been out of the water....

To acknowledge the others' existence, he simply screamed "YOU GUYS ARE DOING A GREAT JOB!" as he kept scooping garbage into buckets. " I can see the granny's front door!"

"I'm good," Witch Hazel replied to Aegis, her tummy doing a pleased little flipflop that the other filly cared enough to ask. Was this what it meant to have friends? Was this what it felt like? It was... nice.

They really were doing a great job and despite her misgivings at the start, Witch Hazel had to admit it felt really good to help out. To do something kind even if it was hard.

"Good work everyone," she said. "It really has been fun." Not that it was over. The garden was still very much a disaster but there was progress and the old granny who lived here could at least shuffle her way to the mailbox without tripping on some random weeds.

Well, it was time to get back to it.

He was amazed at all the work the three girls did as he hauled garbage away. Taking a moment to inhale and remember what happened today, he was super happy to have met them by chance. Smiling a little as he got closer to them on his hoverboard, he responded "well....it wasn't so much fun for me, it felt like real adult phony work. but i am glad you girls had fun!" too bad he didn't have anything to offer to them, not even a bottle of water...

slightly disappointed in himself he looked at them and apologised. "i.... didn't remember to bring water along with me... do you want me to go to the nearest store and buy us all something to drink? i have a little phonybux saved up..."

willingly, he scooped up more garbage and dumped it into the pailbucket he had attached to his hoverboard. that granny is going to be so surprised once she steps out!

Witch Hazel was just beginning to psych herself to tackle the blackberry bushes when the Mer asked about water and she realized that was indeed utterly parched.

They'd been working so hard she hadn't even stopped to consider her own needs. "I am pretty thirsty," she admitted and then frowned. She hadn't thought to bring any money and she didn't want someone else spending all their bux.

"Maybe we should-"

She never got to finish her suggestion.

There was a horrified shout that cut her off.

"HAZEL!" Cirrus wasn't used to raising his voice and it cracked awkwardly.

"W-where are you brothers and sister?" He asked, eyes wide, the bags beneath them a deep purple. "Who are all these kids? Are you alright?"

Witch Hazel stopped what she was doing and peered up at her father. "These are... they're my new friends... and I'm fine. I'm cleaning up like you told me to."

"Oh no," Cirrus fretted. "It wasn't supposed to be this bad. You could have been hurt. You're covered in dirt and leaves. I have to take you home." Oh he was the worst. A horrible father who had abandoned his child to the wild! He should never have organized this through the online community group.

He started to tug Witch Hazel along but was surprised to find she had dug in her heels.

"Wait," she said, shaking her head. "The others... they've been working so hard to get this much done and we're all thirsty and tired. It isn't fair. The showed up to help me and they didn't have to."

Cirrus blinked slowly, collecting his thoughts. What was the right move as a father? He wanted to just whisk her away but... she'd never had friends before.

"Would anyone... would anyone like to... to go to the diner? I'll treat you to food and drinks." Yes, that seemed normal and appropriate.

Witch Hazel also wasn't sure how friends worked but they deserved something for their kindness.

"Yes," she said. "Please come."

(Long post with Cirrus arrival and offer for food and drinks to finish us off!)

Aegis had tugged out another weed and had it dangling mid mouth when the adult pegasus arrived.

Man he looked like he had just seen a ghost and died.

Quirking his brow at the exchange, he eyed Witch Hazel again. So that was her dad huh? She should see the resemblance.... but now that she thought about it, she was pretty hungry herself and chewing on this weed wasn't doing much.

Spitting it out, she fluffed her wings and stomped over, covered in dirt making her look like some kind of warrior from the olden days. "I could go for some food if your offerin." she grinned, glancing up at Cirrus. If the other foals weren't going to jump on it, she sure was. Besides.... Witch Hazel seemed alright.....and she also liked free food. At least that's what she was thinking until the voice of her mother popped into her head.

"Oh...er... I mean... thanks. It's really kind of you and I'd like to tag along..." she said, with some slight trouble, but she managed a small smile at Witch Hazel before looking back at Live and the mer. "Let's go eat."

(wasn't sure if it needed a reply but figured this'll be Aegis's finishing post)

Wave's jaw dropped at the sight of Cirrus coming into view. Shivers went down his spine as he heard the dad's stern voice.. "is this what it is like to have parents?" he questioned.. but all his curious thoughts quickly washed away as he heard the invitation from Witch Hazel to join them for lunch. Nophony nor mer has ever invited him to go eat with him. With a shaky voice and blushing face, the yellow merboy smiled at all the land phonies. His heart felt warm and fuzzy being accepted as one of their own. He was so very happy to have met all of them on this magical day and not being left out. He didn't want to darken the mood by telling them that he had no parents and decided to break the news some other day.

"P-please take me with you. I'm Wave Watcher. I'll behave I promise." His heart was racing as he said that and he followed after them on his hoverboard.
