My Little Phony

Once upon a time in Phonyland, there existed a bar run by a colorful family of phonies called Cloud Nine. After beans were spilt about a certain bartender maybe being a little too much of a Drama Queen for his sisters to deal with, said bartender needed to come up with a very creative (i.e. lucrative) apology to avoid getting his buns roasted and toasted with a flamethrower. After both watching Love Potion No. 9 and consuming the beverage with the same splendid name, it finally occurred to him - Host a Speed Dating event at the bar!

Close friends and family of the bar owners received personalized hoof-written invitations in the mail. Flyers were hastily and maybe even haphazardly posted around town. Word of mouth traveled through the proverbial grapevine. Some kind of way YOU find yourself entering Cloud Nine one fine evening for an event meant to help you potentially meet that somephony special. After registering for the event, getting a time and date confirmation on your Event Ticket, you enter a romantically decorated and even candlelit bar! Cozy looking tables with rose petals sprinkled about are set up to accommodate the event. Jazz music playing softly in the background and even a dancefloor have been prepared to help get you into the mood and groove! You are promptly informed upon entering the establishment (and then reminded several times after) that you will be provided with only one complimentary beverage for free with your Event Ticket. A snack bar is set up on a table along the wall but it's quite apparent that kitchen staff is also present and ready to cook any entrees as ordered; a bar menu has been placed at each table.

Best to get ready and find a seat quickly before the timer locks you in for the five minute rounds and STARTS!

The room is set up with small tables forming a circle. Each table has two chairs that face each other. The idea is that each Phony gets to ask every other Phony three questions. No skipping over Phonies that you might not necessarily like (we all came here to have a good time so please play nicely).

Part One:
To make this easier, your Phony is going to be asking the same three questions to every other Phony. Simply make a post where your Phony enters the room, and then preps their questions.

Fruit Punch stood leaning against the wall behind the bar counter, hoping the event would be successful. He needed to avoid pissing Pink Lemonade off more than he already had for swearing and raising his voice in front of Butter Beer and his friends. Damn, he really couldn't get away with misbehavior anymore, could he? With a sigh he needed to make the night go by swimmingly but this was going to take a while...

While he wasn't able to attend the event as a participant he did decide to fill out the questionnaire just for the hell of it. At least he might get a laugh or two from the responses while he was also 'on the clock' tonight.

She hadn't even known what day this speed dating event was going to fall on, otherwise she would have made herself long-gone before the sun went down. She had simply been working on tomorrow's batch of macarons in the back kitchen before her brother Fruit Punch had gusted into the room, immediately stripping her hooves of her decorating tools.

'Oh, no you don't. Not tonight. If I have to host this thing, then you have to be out there mingling, Baby Sister.' he had told her. And before Creme could scramble out the back door and back to her parents' place, Fruit punch had plucked off her favorite blue and pink hat and threw himself in front of the door with that horrible, terrible, charming grin of his. The mare did her best to protest, but apparently Pink Lemonade agreed with her sentencing. She was to participate in tonight's speed dating.

She had a vague feeling this had all been a purposeful trap.

After silently grieving for her poor social anxiety and washing herself up in the kitchen sink, the mare set herself up at a table in the bar, trying not to be overwhelmed by how utterly romantic the scene was. They had gone crazy with the theme.

But oh, yes, there were a few questions she needed to answer before the dreaded night started. She tried her very best not to sound like an anxiety-ridden shut-in--At least she might be able to find a friend tonight (god forbid if she started crushing on someone again). That was always a nice thought.

Shimmering Sea entered the bar, eyes wide as she looked at the pretty decorations and twinkling candlelights. She'd seen the posters around town and thought that speed dating would definitely be something new and fun to try. The type to be pretty easily impressed by new and interesting things, she took a seat at an empty table toward the side of the bar. Her complimentary drink of choice was simply a club soda to get her started but a little peppy for the event that was meant to be casual.

The flyer had been stapled to a telephone pole outside the morgue and for a brief moment Heavenly Body wondered if the neighborhood surrounding the morgue really had many singles.  The mare had pursed her lips, hair falling across her eyes, and considered that she herself was single.  It was hard to think about romance when surrounded by so much death, but more than that, it was hard to think about finding romance for herself when she was also thinking about the stories of her patients.  With a small tinkling laugh, HB had yanked the flyer from it's staples and tucked it into her purse, deciding maybe it was her turn to have a fantastical romance for once. 

When the large mare arrived at the event she was a little shocked, although it would be hard to tell by the half-lidded sleepy look she seemed to perpetually have on her face.  She hadn't been expecting someplace so thoroughly decorated and official.  Once she checked in at the front door, she took her ticket and made her way over towards the bar to order a mint julip iced tea to take the edge off.  She wasn't much for drinking, but she also wasn't much for talking to alive people outside her coworker Doppel.

Cocktail in hoof, she carefully picked her way across the rose petal covered floor (nearly taking a tumble at one point) and settled down at the largest table she could find to fill out her question card.

Willow Wisp was not exactly the type of mare who planned attending speed dating, or even really think about dating much at all. Sure, at one point in time a bat-winged beauty had swept her off her feet, but it had been years since with no romance and Wisp was OK with that. She floated through her life blissfully oblivious for the most part, she had her family and that was enough. Yet, her dreamy wanderings lead her to this bar and it just so happened to be a singles event. It wasn't really until she had already accepted her drink and note cards that she noticed instructions were given to prepare questions.

Shrugging, Wisp thought carefully about what she would like to ask someone. Not necessarily romantic, but what questions did she want to know to really understand the essence of their being?

Hush Money had heard about the event from her viewers, whom had begged her to cover the event.  Some of them had been positive, hoping their favorite streamer would find romance, while others had hoped she would have cringy encounters for the stream's entertainment.  Hush, ever mindful of her income source, was interested in the latter and had planned on livestreaming the event from her phone.  She encouraged her regulars that they should suggest ideas (for her consideration of course) on who she should interact with once the basic questioning portion was over and even what sort of questions she should ask in the earlier stages of the event.

The alicorn arrived dressed in her most eye-catching outfit, complete with makeup and an elaborate updo.  She was here to provide a service to her viewers and to perhaps acquire a few new ones IRL.  If there was one thing streaming taught her it was how to be charming and get attention.  She knew her best (camera) angles and the most seductive way to pitch her voice.

As the alicorn entered she spoke to the mic clipped to her dress, "well would you look at that chat," she whispered.  "I wonder if there's rooms in the back they're letting attendees use, as this place could rival a love motel."  The mare turned about the room, allowing her loyal viewers to somewhat see through her eyes (or at least her go-pro's) what the event was like.  "Think we'll find any new simps here for the army?"  She said with a wink.

If anyone asked Blind Love why she had entered the speed-dating she would claim it work related. She hosted her own at her restaurant, after all, so seeing how a different face ran the same gig could give her some insight. It wasn't because she was lonely and needed a moment to remind herself that there were other phonies out there. Other phonies that weren't.... him.

It was all fun and games, Blind Love assured herself, sipping on the edge of an green apple martini as she set her bag down by her feet. The question card was clutched tightly to her chest, only set down once she was comfortable in her chair. Three questions? Well.... what did she want to know?

She'd find someone, eventually. It would just make her first date even more magical~ Kiwi settled neatly into large table, eyeballing her question card. She loved these things -- phonies always had the most interesting questions!

Knockout had only come into the bar through the front doors once or twice that he could remember. After attempting to refuse the hoof-written invitation from Fruit Punch, the unicorn had slipped him some cash as an 'additional incentive' to show up and attend the event. He wondered how the hell the bartender had even found his apartment in the first place but with the promise of a free drink and some snacks he could at least waste one evening doing whatever he was supposed to do during speed dating session.

While he did recognize some of the phony present he simply refused to make eye contact with and wouldn't talk to them unless he absolutely had to. The pegasus wouldn't admit to anyone that he did in fact get lonely, but he wasn't entirely sure of the success rate of 'round table dating'. He was single and for the most part enjoyed his completely independent lifestyle. Could he stand to open up a little and maybe get to know some other phony he might not normally meet otherwise...? With a faint groan to himself the vigilante took a healthy drink from his chosen margarita on the rocks. He looked around the room quietly, noticing that there sure were a lot of chicks here...

Tsunami Waves literally crashed into the room much like her name implied. Not so much into objects or anyone else, but more in the sense of her actual entry and being wide smiles and full of energy. She glanced around the room at all the various singles that had already arrived and giggled to herself. Such lovely prospects! And she wasn't the only mer here! Lovely! Someone with something in common! Maybe!

However, she narrowed her eyes and slightly frowned at not seeing the one she thought she would, the one who gave her the bracelet around her wrist. Oh well, she'd find him some day. Maybe some of these fine ponies knew where he was? OH or maybe they'd so be down for some surfing lessons! She could totally use a nice sport across a huge wave right now, feeling the salty breeze through her mane as the water whipped around her tail.

Foxtrot danced in, probably the smallest pony here but definitely had the brightest smile. Maybe someone here would be into the idea of a lovely night out dancing, swinging to various types of music, enjoying a nice drink then gazing at the stars after. She couldn't find out if she didn't try....

Not that she wanted to come, he had drug his cat with him, he took her everywhere. She was his best companion so he couldn't leave her home. Still... he didn't recognize any of these faces and that slightly bothered him.

Except... was that Banana Creme? Oh good, at least one face he knew! Maybe he could scoot on over and just... talk to her....a bit.... WHY WAS THERE SO MANY PONIES HERE GOOD GRIEF?!

Regrind bashfully entered the arena room.  He wasn't entirely sure how he managed to get wrangled into this mess themed soirée, but he felt like if he didn't then he'd be disappointing people.  He was a country boy, at heart, living in the suburbs to be closer to his work.  He'd never ventured further than the farmer's market until now. He inspected the bar itself, smelled the air, looked at the furniture.  Regrind even looked at the carpet to avoid looking directly at anyone, at first. He had to remind himself to mind his manners and he stood up as tall as he could and found himself a chair at a table that didn't look fragile.

Kit wasn't quite sure why he was here.  Ok maybe he did know.  He'd been getting a bit lonely, even with all the customers at his diner.  He didn't have any phony to come home to.  Also Bon Appetit didn't like seeing her children alone so she'd given him the flyer.  Speed dating?  How did you date and speed?  The poor stallion was confused but told his Maw he'd give it a try.  He'd made sure his hat was nice and clean, his coat was brushed free of flour and fried bits, he's even made sure his hooves were washed!

Entering the room, decorated so fancy like he was....intimidated.  He was a big phony, both in weight and height but still this kind of environment wasn't his simple kitchen or country diner.  But he wasn't going to let this stop him!  He could be fancy like the others!  Heck maybe he'd find a nice mare who enjoyed his food and his company.

Lemon Lime grinned enthusiastically as she made her way into the bar, already psyched up to enter Cloud Nine. Usually the tennis player left her now adult kids live their own lives without interference... but not tonight. She had been on a stroll through the neighborhood only for an epiphany to dawn on her. Why should she let her kids have all the fun hitting on beautiful fillies?? For this mare, speed dating was not about finding one's potential mate for life - this was about finding a new gal pal to bring home and 'play with'. Already confident in her success, she had already started a bet with Candy Cane via text message (her cellphone was tucked away safely in her fanny pack) that she'd score more dates than anyone else.

She approached the bar with a loud laugh, enjoying the brief look of sheer horror on her son's face before she reassured him she wouldn't get up to too much trouble by patting his arm. "Don't worry Punch, Mama Lemon's gonna make you proud." The disapproving expression on his face only made her feel even better about her decision to join in. She ordered her favorite drink - Tequila Smash! As she made her way over to a table she gave her daughter Banana Creme a friendly wink before taking a seat and promptly kicking her feet up on the table in a show of her boldness. The blonde was sizing up the competition and she definitely liked the variety of ladies in the room. The stallions however might as well have had cooties.... She didn't bat them an eye at all.

Happy Endings strolled into the bar like he owned the place.  This wasn't his first (or last) rodeo.  When you made your money by comforting the lonely you went to a lot of singles mixers.  After all, why wait for your clients to come to you when you can go to them? 

The flutter swung by the bar to grab a cocktail and maybe flirt with the bartender a little.  It couldn't hurt to get some additional free drinks, he thought.  Plus some liquid courage would help after the recent series of rejections he'd gotten lately.  Had he lost his touch or did he just need some practice?  The stallion ran his ghostly hoof through his mane and surveyed the crowd from the bar stool.

"Any bets on who will leave here happy and who's night is going to end in tears?" He smiled.

King had hens and a foal back home to keep an eye on, but he had put the hens in the coop for the night, and as for the foal... It was good to let kids roam the roost once in a while, right? As a trust exercise? Or something? King didn't know for sure, but he wasn't about to baby Scrambled. One night out wouldn't kill anybody.

The little pegasus felt the need to mingle anyway. His life was turning entirely business, and a bit fatherly, as of late. So he didn't really get to talk up the mares. And how could a rooster stallion coast through life ignoring that impulse?

So, like many others, he strode in with all the confidence in the world. It didn't matter that so many others were taller than him, or already seemed to have the best spots and poses as they waited for the event to start. He still had the best-combed crest mane. Uh-huh.

Drink in hoof, he was going to kill it tonight.

Speed and dating were just two of the things Shrill X loved, put them together and she knew she was going to have a good time.

Finding true love was certainly not on the agenda but the lovelorn at these events were always easy pickings and whisking away some sad so-and-so who needed a good shot of tequila and walk on the wild side was always worth writing down in the diary for the fond memories.

And so in swaggered Shrill X, who went straight over to the bar to get her free drink and then plonked herself down in the nearest chair, leaning precariously back on two legs as she took a big sip to top up the drink or two she'd already had before arriving.

They were a good looking bunch with a few faces she recognized. This was gonna be fun.

She pushed for Expired to try it out, but he refused unless she suffered through this as well. He could see through her. The past couple years had been a whirlwind. Now that she finally accepted that her husband had dissapeared, Sweets was dealing with a lot of emptions. Anger. Sadness. Loneliness. She missed him. But he would want her to be happy, right? She gave a sigh, stepped into the bar and filled out the questionnaire. Finally, she ordered a Shirley temple and sat down.

Expired cursed at himself. He didn't want to be here, but a deal was a deal. He stepped into the overly crowded bar and looked over the guidelines for this evening. If nothing else, he got a free drink for the evening. He ordered a whiskey neat. Then figured out his questions while waiting at the bar.

Bijou Blende stepped into the bar and looked around with a sleepy gaze. Ugh, she had finished up a custom order at work and was too tired to be here right now. Why did this have to be tonight? She went straight to the bar and ordered a double espresso. The bartender looked at her funny, unsure if she was being serious or not. She didn't blink, waiting for the sweet relief of caffeine to get her through this night.

When she finally got her drink, she turned to scan the crowd. "Wisp??" Bijou trotted over to sit next to her sibling. It would be less weird if she made her presence known now. "Hey there, I didn't know you would be here tonight. I feel better knowing someone here. Did you think of any good questions yet?" She said peering over occasionally as she tried to figure out her own questions.

Fatal Attraction was practically quivering with excitement.  It'd been so long since she'd last had a paramour and she was beginning to feel awfully lonely after her love interest errr...  Disappeared.  At least that's what she'd told the cops when they'd come knocking at her door.  Now here she was, dressed to the nines in her best maid costume (that's what the mares and stallions found attractive, right?) and ready to meet the phony who would definitely be her one true love this time, unlike all the other times before.  Those phony had obviously just tricked her, made her believe that they were destined to be together forever when it was all just a lie.  Some of them even had the audacity to tell her that they thought she was creepy.  The nerve!

Well that was not going to happen tonight, the mare was feeling confident and giddy as she walked into Cloud Nine.  She was so certain that tonight was the night, the night she would meet her one true love.  They would instantly hit it off and then they would be whisked off in a whirlwind romance culminating in lots of foals and a cute little house.  Of course her perfect partner would never think she was creepy or say they didn't like her collecting their used tissues.  They'd also never even consider looking at another phony with love in their eyes.  That was all for her!

"I love to make bread, but I don't think my job can be a hobby." She laughed to herself trying to think of something. "I like to feed birds in the park. Their sweet little faces and the way they hop around sometimes. So cute."

"I enjoy creating. So I think I would be the artist in this scenario."

Sweets froze seeing the next phony. She was tall. Sweet blushed wildly looking at the stunning figure. Was it the lighting in her or was this phony's coat actually sparkling? It took everything in her to introduce herself.

What is the greatest adventure you've ever been on?
After the question Sweet was knocked back into reality. "Can I say falling in love for the first time?" She smiled, but started to blink away tears. "I know that's not a great answer for a first date." Sweets laughed, uneasy but finding comfort in the uncomfortable.

How comfortable are you around dead things?
"I don't think I have ever been around anything dead before... I imagine it's a little scary but also peaceful? Quiet. No more bills. No more stress. Is that morbid?" She tilted her head a bit.

"7??" She questioned herself. "I am no stranger to a flour explosion in the kitchen, but magic tends to help in most cases."

Sweet sat down with the next phony and was in awe once again. She had a softness about her, but also hay spilling from her stitching. Her heart warmed, she was reminded of her son Exp , and his siblings.

"What animal do you feel the most kinship with and why?"
"That is difficult. I love birds, but I think that is with a bit of envy. They can easily fly away if they feel like it. But they are soft, round and can sing. I am like a flightless bird!~" She chimed happily.

Wisp becomes distracted midway through your conversation by literally anything and points to something else in the room. "Would you look at that, isn't that neat?"
Sweet turns to see the phony pointing at an empty glass at the table next to them. It took a while for her to notice but the ice had lined up in a satisfying row. Was that what she was pointing at?? "Hmm, the ice? That is really nice." She said unsure, but smiling at the interesting character before her.

If you could get back any one thing you've lost what would it be?
"...My husband." She bowed her head and stepped away quickly. Blinking away tears again. Maybe she wasn't ready for this.

"First dates. I feel like I've had so many. At this point... I just want to sit at home with a glass of wine and have a nice dinner. I want to have deep conversations and to relax. All of this-" She gestures to the bar. "It's too much for me. I'm too old for this." She laughs.

"I like apples. They can be sour, sweet, crunchy, soft. Very versatile. Very yummm."

HB smiled, "Oh yes.  I wonder how that beetle managed to sneak it's way in here."  She sighed dreamily, "It's iridescent shell is quite beautiful, I hope it doesn't get damaged in all the hub bub going on.  It's brave of it to wander in here I think.  Maybe it's the lone knight to the beetle kingdom and it's out doing reconnaissance for the last of the beetle nobility.  They're running out of food and water, but this beetle is willing to risk it's life for the beetle princess it loves..."  HB blushes, realizing she'd been rambling.  The other phony likely thought she was weird.

"I'm not really afraid of loss.  It's just a part of life.  If you were meant to have it then it will find it's way back to you.

"An orc?  Oh that's rather magical isn't it?"  She hummed happily.  An orc breaking into a bar was a rather lot like her stories.  "I admit I'd be rather useless in a fight, but I'd like to imagine there'd be some sort of dashing hero or heroine who'd swoop in to save us all, assuming the orc is a villain of course.  There is always the possibility that the orc could actually be some sort of rough and tumble anti-hero here to stir up trouble and get answers.  I'd sort of like that too."

"Hmm...  I've never really pictured what going on a date would be like for me before.  I'm usually too busy imagining stories for other people."

Now this was a stallion that looked like he had a lot of fight in him.  HB had seen quite a few of that type in the morgue, stallions and mares who had bitten off more than they could chew.  She was sure he probably had some good stories though and while there was a twinge of sadness at the thought of his inevitable death there was also some jealousy too.  She could never manage to live a life with as much adventure as that with how she was always tripping over her hooves.

"I'm always surprised how comics are looked down on in the literary world.  They're the perfect blending of art and literature after all.  I can't say I've really read much of them though."  Maybe she should change that, she mused.

She didn't really dabble too much in the superhero genre outside of the occasional movie she went to see with Doppel.  "Rorschach I suppose, although he's not really super...  He's gritty and mysterious though, I kind of like that.  It makes you wonder what other stories he could tell."

HB perked up at that one, getting a little bit excited.  "Oh well that really depends.  Are they an anti-hero or a villain?  What's their backstory?  Is it tragic?  I hope it's tragic."

"I like to look at the tide pools," she chimed happily, although she was always doing her best to not slip on the wet rocks into them.  It would be a lie to say she hadn't fallen into a fair number of them and destroyed their fragile ecosystems, resulting in many tears on her part.  "They're entire world's unto themselves, dramatic universes in a tiny fun size package."

"Oh, the one who died recently?"  She hung her head, solemn.  "I'm very sorry for your loss."

Another petite phony, HB did her best not to stumble around her, gripping the table with her hooves to steady herself until she made it into her seat.

"In theory, yes, in practice... Not so much," she blushed.

"I'm a bit too clumsy for dancing, but I do like listening to classical while I read."  The mare felt rather awkward, she had steady hooves with her work but in all other situations requiring physical exertion she was rather inept.

What relaxes you most?
At least this question didn't have to do with something she was terrible at.  HB breathed a sigh of relief.  "Settling down to read a book always makes me feel cozy and relaxed.  It's nice to do it cuddled under blankets next to a fire, but in the bath is rather nice too."

HB couldn't help but let out a giggle as she looked at the spunky stallion.  He seemed like the adventurous type like the red pegasus from before, but not quite so angry.  There was something more youthful about him and the carousel couldn't help but smile.  She was sure the sort of adventures he went on were a lot less serious and a lot more fun than the stallion she'd spoken to before.

"Pocket monster?  Hmm, well there's not really a lot of monsters I can imagine would fit in pockets.  I guess fairies could and if it was a big enough pocket (like a sweatshirt maybe) perhaps a gremlin even."

"Monsters form teams?  I guess I have heard of things like vampires and werewolves teaming up in stories, but I can't recall the same for any of the smaller monsters of yore."

As a mortician she was quite familiar with anatomy and she had long since gotten over being bothered by it.  Leveling up ones groin area though, she hadn't really heard of that.  With a tilt of her head she stared at him questioningly.  "Is this some new fad involving pills?  I've heard of stallions doing that sort of thing..."  What a strange question to ask.

Well this phony had lovely curls and he was about her size too.  HB's wings fluttered, feeling more comfortable knowing she couldn't as easily fall and cause this stallion bodily harm.  Although... She couldn't help but be drawn to his neck.  Perhaps he had some interesting backstory like Frankenstein's monster she wondered.  That would be so exciting!

What are your feelings on renewable energy/resources?
"Ah, it's good to care about the planet.  I have a bit more knowledge about composting as it aligns more with my job, but...  I think it's good to want better things for the future."  HB smiled and fiddled with her hair.  She spent a lot of time lost in dreams about the future or the past, but not much thinking about the present.  Maybe she should have solar panels installed upon the rough of the morgue...

Would you eat lab created meat/food?
"Death is apart of life, so I have no problem with eating meat.  Although I do wish the practice could be a bit kinder to the animals.  Mass production reduces magnificent creatures down to inanimate objects.  But, I have nothing against lab made food.  It's more sustainable in the long term and I have no problem eating it."

Do you think Phonyland is energy efficient?
"I'm afraid I don't know much about that..."  She chewed the inside of her cheek.  "I wouldn't know what to do about it if it wasn't."

Another large stallion.  It felt rather nice to be around a few phony who were about her height.  She was still accident prone regardless, but at least she could do less damage.

"Someone to have a whirlwind romance with would be nice.  Something special and magical with someone who brings about positive change in the world.  But, I'm aware that's unrealistic.  I read a lot of books, but it would be nice to be swept off my feet... In not the usual way that I am."  She clasped her hooves together.  "I'd probably be happy with just about anything as long as they were kind."

"I figured I should get out more.  Doppel thinks it's bad for me to just be interacting with the corpses and him.  I saw the sign as I was leaving work and just sort of wandered in.  I didn't think about how uncomfortable it would be beforehand though," she grimaced.  She definitely had not thought this one through.

"Sloth I'd say," the carousel said with a nervous laugh.  "I'm a hard worker, but I tend to have a rather hard time staying on my feet so I move rather slow when I have to go from place to place."

"Oh they're quite nice if you're spending them indoors reading a book, they can really add to the atmosphere.  Although, if I have to leave the house it really does make it quite a bit harder not to trip on the flagstones."

"Um, I wouldn't be terribly good at fighting.  I think it would be better if I was just cheering on the hero instead.  Though if the enemy could be anything, then I guess I could help a little combating rot."  Embalming, after all, was a good part of her work.
